📜 COIN STORIES
1866 Seated Liberty Half Dollar
In 1866, America was beginning to rebuild after the Civil War. More than 600,000 lives had been lost, and the nation was searching for hope and unity in the aftermath of its greatest conflict.
That same year, the United States Mint introduced the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the reverse of the half dollar for the first time. The phrase was added following public support during the Civil War, reflecting a desire by many Americans to acknowledge faith during one of the nation’s darkest chapters.
Lady Liberty remained on the obverse, representing the freedoms the United States was founded upon nearly 90 years earlier. Together, Liberty and the new motto created a powerful reminder of the ideals many believed would help guide the country forward.
This beautifully preserved proof example has developed delicate natural toning over the past 160 years, adding another chapter to its journey through American history. As we approach America’s 250th birthday, it serves as a reminder that the nation’s story has been shaped by both its triumphs and its trials.

Today’s challenge is this 1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar.

Take a closer look at the high points—especially the hair above Liberty’s ear and the eagle’s breast feathers—and how much detail remains. What grade would you assign?
And yes… we remembered to cover the barcode this time. 😅
The certified grade will be revealed tomorrow.
Good luck!
