Do you take any of these meds?

As a longevity physician with a genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease, there are some medications that I avoid taking myself. I also work to get my patients off of these drugs by providing better alternatives whenever possible.

1️⃣ Anticholinergics like Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), Atarax (Hydroxyzine), Elavil (Amitriptyline), Detrol (Tolterodine)

2️⃣ Benzodiazepines like Va**um (Diazepam), Xanax (Alprazolam), Ativan (Lorazepam), Klonopin (Clonazepam), Ambien (Zolpidem)

3️⃣ Proton Pump Inhibitors or PPIs like Prilosec (Omeprazole), Nexium (Esomeprazole), Prevacid (Lansoprazole)

4️⃣ Pain meds like Tylenol (Acetaminophen), NSAIDS like Advil/Motrin (Ibuprofen), Aleve (Naproxen) and, of course, narcotic pain medications.

5️⃣ Antibiotics like Penicillins (e.g., Amoxicillin), Cephalosporins (e.g., Cefalexin), Macrolides (e.g., Azithromycin) may be necessary at times, but can often be avoided.

6️⃣ Statins, like Lipitor (Atorvastatin), Crestor (Rosuvastatin), Zocor (Simvastatin). It’s important to weigh the risks and benefits of statins with a physician who values brain health as much as heart health.

Instead of prescribing these drugs, our team works to manage health conditions through lifestyle interventions, dietary changes, and safer alternatives, always tailored to the individual’s needs.

While every person is unique, we can almost always create a health plan that includes better options.
