S and S Computers

With Windows 10 coming to end of support on Oct. 14, you may have a computer that doesn't support Windows 11. Fear not. You may not have to buy a new computer. Depending on the brand, I can replace the primary hardware inside the computer for less than buying a new one. Usually around $450+tx. And this isn't some entry level upgrade. It's a mid-high end upgrade that should be viable for another 10 years. Sadly, I can only do this for desktop computers, not laptops.

Same day service. I can generally do that. Most stores in town are a week or 2 out on their ability to get to something. I keep my customer base lower, but with better customers. This give me the ability to get to things pretty much right away.

So if you have a computer issue and no one can get to it as soon as you would like, give me a call. Even if I have to order parts I can probably get you up and running in 3-4 days tops.

Remember, I am a one-man operation so you are always dealing with the boss.

Passwords. Everyone hates them, me included. Well, things are beginning to change.

I have recently started to try out a couple of authentication methods that allow me to virtually eliminate the use of passwords. One is a fingerprint reader and the other is the Yubikey hardware authenticator.

The Yubikey is a hardware device that plugs in to a USB port or uses near-field communication to provide authentication.

The fingerprint reader is also a USB device. You can set it up to log in to Windows and other places that support bio-metric devices.

With either of these devices you can log in to a few services with no password. If you use a password manager that supports either of these devices (I use LastPass) you can pretty much cut out all passwords except for a master password. You would never need to create another password again. You would let your password manager create and store your passwords and use one of these devices to log in to the password manager. Easy peasy.
