Do Better Training

Every great teacher deserves a retirement plan. ❤️
For years, Groot was Dr. Andy's right-hand man, coming to work almost every day and quietly helping teach countless dogs how to dog. He was Willow's mentor when she was just a puppy, showing her the ropes one calm interaction at a time.
These days, Groot enjoys a slower pace of life, but every now and then he stops by to check on his former student. Judging by these smiles, we'd say Willow is making him proud. 🥹
Some lessons last a lifetime. 💙

✨ This photo doesn't look all that exciting... and that's exactly why it's one of our favorites. 💙🐾
Just out of frame are **two different dogs** walking away from Scoop.
A few years ago, that moment would've completely unraveled our walk. Seeing other dogs often sent Scoop into a spiral that was difficult for him to recover from. Big feelings. Big reactions. Big stress—for everyone involved.
Today?
He noticed them. 👀
He paused.
He made the choice to disengage.
He checked back in with me.
And we kept walking. 💙
Those few seconds may not look like much, but they represent **hundreds of tiny moments** that came before them. Countless training sessions. Management. Pattern games. Reinforcing check-ins. Learning to regulate emotions instead of simply reacting. Showing up on the hard days. Celebrating the smallest victories. Then doing it all again tomorrow.
Progress like this isn't luck. It isn't magic. It isn't something our dogs just "grow out of."
It's built. Brick by brick. Day by day. 🧱✨
If you're in the middle of your own journey with a reactive, fearful, or easily overwhelmed dog, don't underestimate those little wins. Every voluntary glance back at you. Every deep breath. Every successful disengagement. Every recovery that's just a little bit faster than yesterday.
Those tiny victories are adding up—even when it doesn't feel like it. ❤️
Keep showing up for your dog. Keep celebrating progress, not perfection. One day you'll find yourself looking at a moment that seems ordinary to everyone else... and realizing it's something you once thought might never happen.
That's the good stuff. 🐾💙

🇺🇸❤️ Happy Independence Day from all of us at Do Better Training! 🐾
Today, we're celebrating with gratitude—for our families, our friends, our animals, and the freedoms so many have fought to protect.
At the same time, Independence Day is also an opportunity to reflect. As we celebrate our own freedoms, let's remember those who are still fighting to be seen, heard, accepted, and afforded the same opportunities to live safely and authentically.
We hope today is filled with kindness, compassion, and a little extra grace—for both people and their pets. ❤️🤍💙
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

🎆 Fireworks are fun for some... but for many pets, they're one of the scariest nights of the year. ❤️🐾
One of our favorite Fourth of July tips comes from behavior expert Kim Brophey: the Box Fan Hack!
💨 Turn on one (or even a few!) box fans around your dog's safe space to help create a blanket of gentle white noise. Unlike many white noise machines, box fans help mask the sudden booms and crackles of fireworks while also keeping the room cool during the summer heat.
To help your dog feel even more secure:
🏡 Set up a cozy "fort" with their favorite bed and blankets.
🧩 Offer a frozen lick, stuffed toy, or long-lasting chew.
🎶 Add calming music if your dog enjoys it.
🚪 Keep doors, windows, and curtains closed.
💙 Stay calm and let your dog choose where they feel safest.
Every dog is different. Some may sleep through the fireworks, while others need a little extra support—and that's okay. Meeting them where they are is one of the kindest things we can do.
Stay safe, stay cool, and have a happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸✨
