Since 2001, we have witnessed the benefits that a social emotional curriculum can have in our Preschool. According to The Pennsylvania State University and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, “ Social Emotional Learning in the early years demonstrates immediate and long-term positive outcomes.”

By teaching Social Awareness, we have given our young children the skills to empathize with others. “Stand In My Shoes” by Bob Sornson is one example of literature that we used to help young children understand what someone else is feeling. Shared with parents and staff, it helps all ages learn the importance of seeing the world through the eyes of others.

Findings from Bierman & Motamedi, 2015, conclude that “SEL programs have unique developmental leverage when implemented during the preschool years as it focuses on areas of development that are growing rapidly between the ages of 3-6, when children are dependent upon and highly responsive to adult input and support.”

We help children understand and practice strategies for managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. We encourage children to examine their feelings and critically think about solutions to support growth in Self-Management.

We also empower young children to take charge of their emotions for Responsible Decision Making for their behaviors in school and community situations. Children are given the chance to develop, implement and model effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

We have built family and community partnerships by promoting social and emotional learning in our young children. We take the Bull out of Bullying and teach our children to have the Courage to Be Pro-Kind.
