Projectile motion is one of those A Level Physics topics where students often know the equations before they really believe the idea.
Horizontal and vertical motion are independent.
That sounds simple, but it feels deeply counter-intuitive when you first see it.
A PASCO trolley moving at constant speed can fire a ball vertically upwards and catch it again. The trolley does not leave the ball behind because the ball already has the trolley’s horizontal velocity.
The classic hunter and monkey problem shows the same principle. Gravity affects both projectile and target in the vertical direction, while the horizontal motion is treated separately.
This is why practical demonstrations matter. They turn abstract vector components into something students can see, question and understand.
Good Physics teaching is not just about giving students the formulae. It is about helping them replace everyday intuition with a better model of the world.
