🌙 Parent Sleep Hacks That Might Actually Work 😴
Getting kids to bed doesn’t have to feel like an Olympic event. Here are two simple tricks that may help:
💆 1. Gentle massage before bed
Using a massage gun on the lowest setting (or even a simple hand massage) for a minute or two on the legs, shoulders, or back may help kids relax.
Why?
Massage stimulates pressure receptors in the skin and muscles, which can activate the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system. This can reduce muscle tension, lower stress hormones, and increase relaxation—making it easier for some kids to settle down.
⭐ This can be especially helpful for some children with ADHD, who often seek calming sensory input and may have more difficulty winding down at bedtime. The deep-pressure stimulation can provide calming sensory feedback that helps some kids transition to sleep. Just avoid using it over bones, joints, the neck, or at high speeds.
🪟 2. Blackout curtains
Even small amounts of light can tell the brain it’s time to stay awake. A dark room helps the body naturally produce melatonin, the hormone that signals it’s time to sleep. Blackout curtains are especially helpful during the summer when the sun stays up later.
✨ Bonus tip: Keep the bedtime routine the same every night. Kids thrive on consistency, and their brains learn to associate the routine with sleep.
