Why Outdoor Tile Falls Apart (Part 2)
Take a closer look at these steps.
— Adhesive was applied in patches
— Large areas have no contact at all
— Voids are everywhere
Someone even tried to fix it by adding new adhesive on top of old —
this never works.
Here’s what happens next:
— water gets under the tile
— adhesive weakens
— tile loses bond and falls off
How it should be done
— completely remove old adhesive
— use outdoor-rated materials
— achieve 95%+ full coverage (no voids)
— apply adhesive to both:
• base
• tile
— create proper slope for drainage
Outdoor tile is not just installation —
it’s a water management system.
Ignore that, and failure is guaranteed.

Waterproofing Mistake That Requires a Full Tear-Out
During this project audit, we identified a critical waterproofing failure.
Non-waterproof panels were installed, and tile adhesive was applied directly on top of them.
The client planned to use RedGard over this surface, assuming it would provide protection.
This creates the illusion of waterproofing — but it’s a serious mistake.
Here’s why this system fails:
— Tile adhesive is not a waterproof substrate
— Adhesive is porous and absorbs moisture
— It is not designed to receive waterproofing membranes
RedGard applied over cured adhesive does not bond consistently:
— delamination
— bubbling
— micro-cracks over time
Covering seams with adhesive is not waterproofing.
Adhesive is not a sealant.
With constant moisture:
— water passes through the adhesive
— reaches the wall panels
— panels absorb moisture
— the entire system fails
Final Conclusion
This is not a repairable issue.
The only correct solution is:
— full demolition
— installation of proper waterproof panels
— application of a manufacturer-approved waterproofing system
Anything else is a temporary fix that will fail again.

$2.5 Million Home — Tile Audit (Video 6 of 6)
When Nothing Is Level — Anywhere
At this point, the problem is impossible to ignore.
— This trim strip is visibly tilted to the right.
— The fireplace shelf is sloping one way, while the fireplace itself leans another.
Look at the baseboards:
— in some areas, there’s almost no gap between the floor and the baseboard
— in others, the gap is so large you could fit a finger through it
And this isn’t isolated — it’s everywhere.
Doors don’t close properly.
They’re not adjusted.
Shelves are out of level.
Outlets are out of level.
The fireplace is out of level.
You don’t even need a level to see it —
it’s obvious with the naked eye.
This is a $2.5 million home.
And the work is careless across the board —
not just tile, but all finish work:
layout, leveling, alignment, coordination.
This is what happens when quality control is missing at every stage.
Price doesn’t guarantee quality.
Only proper oversight does.

Small Gaps That Turn Into Big Failures
Here’s another area where problems start small — and get worse.
— You can see a gap that begins small and gradually increases.
This usually means the tile was installed incorrectly from the very beginning. The layout drifted, and no one corrected it.
— Wood baseboards were used in wet areas.
This is a bad decision. Water will always escape from the tub or shower, and wood baseboards will:
• absorb moisture
• crack
• swell
• eventually rot
In wet zones, these materials will fail over time.
— There’s a clear issue around the valve switch area.
The tile here is broken and cracked all around.
This usually points to a deeper problem behind the wall — movement, stress, or improper installation.
Regardless of the cause, the result is obvious:
the tile has completely shattered.
In high-end homes, these details aren’t minor.
They’re early warning signs of much bigger problems coming next.
More coming in Part 5.

A Floor Prep Mistake That Could've Cost $30,000
during a renovation audit on one of our projects, we discovered major mistakes that could have led to $30,000+ in damages and months of wasted time.
Here’s what happened:
1️⃣ Choosing Contractors Based Only on Price
The homeowner hired a team simply because they were the cheapest — without checking their background or qualifications.
❗If you want to know how to properly choose contractors, comment “PREP” and I’ll send you the same checklist we use to vet our own crews.
2️⃣ Poor Subfloor Demo
The old tile adhesive was only partially removed. Some areas were scraped, others left untouched — leaving major height differences. Any leveling on top of that would fail.
3️⃣ Dangerous Floor Prep for Large-Format Tile
The client planned to install large-format tile, which requires specific prep steps.
Instead of following proper procedures, the crew installed AQUABAR “B” paper — which is a v***r barrier used under hardwood, not tile or self-leveling.
Then they stapled metal lath on top of it and prepared to pour self-leveling mix.
🚨 That setup is a recipe for failure.
❌ Self-leveling compound does not bond to this paper
❌ It will crack, separate, and become unstable
❌ The tile will eventually fail and break apart
The correct process is to remove that paper completely and pour directly onto the approved subfloor.
4️⃣ Unnecessary Materials and Labor
They installed metal lath across the entire floor — but it’s only needed in areas where the floor is more than 1/4” uneven.
So the client paid for materials and labor they didn’t need.
💥 If they had continued with this setup, the whole floor would’ve cracked — and the client could’ve lost tens of thousands of dollars.
✅ We stopped it just in time and explained how to fix it properly.
Now the homeowner knows exactly how to move forward — safely and professionally.
