Here’s a few notes about my process …

Composition

Much work is done before I ever even pick up a paintbrush. I paint from photos – either my own or a talented photographer – so I scour thousands of ideas looking for the right mood, light and subject to fit what I’m trying to do. I keep these in a series of idea albums. There are currently 77 photos in my final album loosely sorted by my desire to paint them.

Permission

Once I’ve found a photo I want to use, I reach out to the photographer to ask for permission. Photographers spend a tremendous amount of time, money and physical effort to get their shots, so I treat them with a ton of respect. They’ve earned it! I offer to credit their account when I post my finished painting and a portion of the proceeds when a painting sells.

Presketch

Sometimes I might need to do elaborate editing and repositioning of elements or even combine elements from several photos to get what I want. For this I use the @procreate app on an iPad. It’s an amazing tool for trying out all sorts of ideas very quickly. I use it just like a sketchbook.

Sketch

I use light watercolor pencils for my initial sketch and then follow with Premier Brush Markers from @prismacolor in various shades of Light Umber. The marker lines won’t wash away, but hide nicely under my subsequent layers.

Underpainting

I tone my panel with a 50/50 mix of Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold fluid acrylic and Satin Glazing Liquid – both from @goldenpaints. This underpainting warms up my paintings and gives them unifying energy that I like.

Surface

My favorite surface is Claybord from @ampersand_art. These are archival hardboard panels with an ultra smooth kaolin clay surface applied.

Paint

My favorite paints are Fluid Acrylics from @goldenpaints. If I want them thicker or more opaque, I mix in the thicker, cheaper Blockout white from Blickcrylic which has a wonderful soft butter consistency. To keep them from drying so quickly and improve flow, I add in Satin Glazing Liquid.
