Messenger Birds rise from the ashes, literally. Raku in Japanese means, comfort. That's why these birds are so special. The other colored birds our artist creates do not go through this same rigorous, dangerous, fire process from being caught on fire to being cleaned and in a lot of ways reborn.

Raku firing requires bringing the temp up to 1800-1900 degrees on each bird. They glow a warm yellow color. Almost looks like hot butter.

Once they are that hot they are placed inside the lid with saw dust. The saw dust at the bottom builds the flames. And combusts. The flames come outside the tin can snf reach upward toward the top of the can, smoking and producing high flames. once it's combusted it's then lifted up once again and flames go higher. Then shut once more. 🔥

it's very important to be extremely careful because it's very dangerous between the flames and the temp of each bird. We wear fire proof gloves and use metal tongs as well to remove the bird from kiln to can.

Each bird goes through a transformation, a rebirth through the fire and becomes more beautiful and stronger than what was before. They are removed from the ash dirty, covered so we are not able to see the markings until they are scrubbed and cleaned.

These individual markings are from the dust, straw and paper inside. They are unique to every single bird. No marking are alike.
