On this date (5/7) in country music history...
1949 - Hank Williams "Lovesick Blues" tops the country singles chart to become his very first #1 hit.
1958 - Seven years before he would turn his attention to country music, Conway Twitty scores a #1 hit on Billboards Hot 100 with "It's Only Make Believe", which he cowrote with Jack Nance.
1977 - Conway Twitty makes his 20th appearance at the top of the country charts with "Play, Guitar Plat".
1983 Shelly West takes "Jose Cuervo" to #1 on the country singles chart. It is her only appearance at the top as a solo artist. (She had shared the top spot 2 years prior with David Frizzell and their duet "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma".)
1994 - Clint Black makes his 8th appearance at the top of the country charts with "Good Run Of Bad Luck", which he cowrote with Hayden Nichols.

On this date (5/6) in country music history...
1958 - Ray Price records the Roger Miller penned "Invitation To The Blues". The song spent 19 weeks on the country charts, peaking at #3.
1970- Sammi Smith records "Help Me Make It Through The Night". Written by Kris Kristofferson, not only was it her first (and only) #1 single, it was a crossover hit, peaking a #8 on Billboard's Hot 100. It was named the 1971 CMA Single Of The Year, and earned her the 1972 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
1978 - Dolly Parton tops the country charts with "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right".
1985 MCA Records releases George Strait's "The Fireman" as the 3rd and final single from his album "Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind". It would go on to peak at #5.
