Where there was a store, there is no more. What was supposed to be a minor renovation has graduated to a full blown, back to the studs, remodel. It's going to be terrific but it's going to take a wee bit more time than first thought. We all needed to find something to do... I did a bit of writing. So here you have one of two silly, overblown trailers that are in reality, a shameless plug for my new book, John Frum: The Reluctant Messiah. After all, what could be better? A good book and a hot cup of- oh... never mind- sorry about that.

Let's chat, shall we?

Most of you, the Java faithful, have heard we're closing our doors (if we had them) on September 24th. We've caught wind of some pretty wild stories floating about as to why, so I thought it best to set things straight. I don't normally broadcast the inner workings of running a small business- it's bad form and frankly, I suspect you'd find it a bit mundane and boring. But in this case it just might be necessary to quell the current rumors as well as the ones that have not yet been made up.

So, here's the Cliff Notes version:

All indications and our expectations were that Carilion would be extending to us the usual three year extension to our contract. In a surprising, last minute move, we were offered one. A small business cannot function properly without knowing what the future, beyond a single year lies ahead. Without those assurances, the hiring of people, equipment purchases, coffee contracts, etc. are all but impossible with these limitations. We countered with a three year plan that was summarily rejected.

I am not privy to the reasons why, but management has determined that a Carilion coffee shop would be better suited to the needs of the hospital and staff and they are actively making preparations to transition to it. The ironic part of all of this is that 13 years ago Java was brought in to replace what was at the time, a badly failing Carilion coffee shop.

I greatly appreciate all the kind words and support, especially those directed to my employees. They really are the best.
Oh, and to the person who started the rumor that my folks are actually shape-shifting lizard people? That is patently false. The owners on the other hand...
