This summer we are hosting our annual Field School! In addition to the basics of archaeological field work and lab processes, students will learn digital recordation techniques using ESRI Field Maps, mobile photogrammetry and digital mapping!

This year’s field school will provide a unique experience in Community Based archaeology, where students will be involved in the Archaeology of Memorialization, a multi-year project carried out by The Montpelier Descendants Committee and James Madison's Montpelier.

The overall goal of this project is to assist in the construction of a
Memorial to the Enslaved at Montpelier in an area adjacent to but outside of the Burial Ground for the Enslaved.

Students will help our team 1) define the extent of the burial ground in order to protect those burials, 2) explore archaeological evidence for how the enslaved and their descendants commemorated and honored that space.

This will help the MDC in restoring the landscape of the burial ground, and honoring those buried there.
