REALITY: While homeowners policies do protect your belongings, they cap payouts for specific categories of items. Jewelry coverage often tops out around $1,500. Fi****ms, coin collections, fine art, and other valuables have their own limits too — and those limits may be far less than what your items are actually worth.

To properly protect high-value items, you need to add a rider or scheduled personal property endorsement to your policy.
