The Supreme Court’s decision to weaken Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act is a step backward for American democracy, and especially Black Americans will feel the consequences most. Section 2 was one of the last effective tools to challenge voting systems that dilute black political power. By narrowing it, this Court has made it easier for those systems to survive.

This isn’t abstract. It means maps that split Black communities apart can be harder to challenge. It means rules that reduce the weight of Black and minority votes face fewer obstacles. It means that discrimination no longer has to be obvious to be effective. It just has to be subtle enough to pass the Court’s new standard.

For decades, Section 2 recognized a simple truth: discrimination doesn’t always announce itself. Now, the Court is effectively saying that unless it does, it may stand. That shift places a heavier burden on Black voters to prove harm, even when the impact is clear.
The result is predictable: fewer protections, fewer successful challenges, and a political system where equal representation becomes harder to secure, not easier.

This decision doesn’t just reinterpret a law. It weakens a safeguard that generations fought to put in place. And in doing so, it risks turning back progress that was never guaranteed to begin with.

Today is a deeply personal day for me. I join fellow Hokies in remembering the 32 lives taken on April 16, 2007.

Nineteen years later, we still carry the weight of that loss, and we also carry the strength, resilience, and unity that define our community.
