Tonight I was telling my cat, Alice...

There will come a time when we go on a long, dark journey without one another.

No more petting, no more cuddling, no more play.

No more spring bud eyes looking up at me. No strong hand holding her close.

But that time hasn't come, and today we have it all.

And the best days are yet to come.

And when the dark journey ends, maybe we'll remember pieces of ourselves and each other, and maybe we'll find some semblance of this again.

But I would hope she finds better.

A life without end in a world without pain.

Not Heaven, but a healed Earth. A place we've been building. A place we could destroy if we're not careful.

I want to make my cat immortal. I wish I could do it as the me of today, but the best I can do is inspire progress through art.

And fill her life with opportunities where I can.

There's so much we cannot do – and may never do – no matter how many lives we live, but if I can push the world 0.0001% closer to a state where Alice can live forever, my life is worthwhile.
