RHS Lady Indians fall to Franklin Pierce 02/15/2020

RHS Lady Indians fall to Franklin Pierce 45-39 in District tourney

In a low scoring first quarter the third-seeded Renton Lady Indians and the fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce Lady Cardinals scored most of the quarter’s points on free throws. The quarter ended with the Lady Cardinals leading 12-9. To end the quarter, Junior Darian Couper hit a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer after great ball movement by the Lady Indians. Renton ended the first quarter with seven fouls while Franklin Pierce had five fouls.

In the second quarter, the RHS Lady Indians had 10 fouls at the 4:50 minute mark and down 19-11. Good defense was played by both teams but there were also numerous reach-in fouls by both teams. Lady Indian Freshman Jesselle Victo Castillo netted a barely buzzer-beating half court three-pointer to close the deficit to three points, 22-19 at the end of the second quarter as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms to discuss second half strategy.

Darian Couper hit a 14-footer and then drained a three pointer to start the third quarter and gave Renton a 26-22 lead. Good half time adjustments by Renton Coach Tim White found his charges leading 33-29 after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter started with a flurry of Franklin Pierce baskets to give them a lead. Renton hit a three-pointer, but the Lady Cardinals could not miss from the charity stripe and since they were in the double bonus, they were shooting two free throws for every Renton one-and-one. Free throws allowed Franklin Pierce to take a 39-38 lead halfway through the fourth quarter; a lead they would not relinquish.
The Lady Cardinals led 41-38 with 2:38 to go in the game. Four more charity tosses gave the visitors a 45-38 lead. Renton would hit a technical foul free throw to end the scoring at 45-39.

With the loss, third-seeded Renton now travels to Bellarmine Prep High School (Tacoma), on Tuesday, February 18, to face 11th-seeded Foster. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. The winner will play at Wilson High School (Tacoma), on Thursday, February 20, with tip-off at 7:45 p.m., versus the winner of eighth-seeded Washington and 10th-seeded Eatonville.

RHS Lady Indians sweep Tyee 01/23/2020

Power! RHS Lady Indians sweep Tyee Lady Totems in three games

On Wednesday, January 22, the Renton High School Lady Indians basketball teams (Varsity, JV and C-Team) hosted a conference foe – Tyee Lady Totems. The undefeated varsity bested Tyee 66-33; the JV Team (10-2) won 49-10 and the C-Team (3-0) completed the sweep routing Tyee 47-9.

Varsity

The varsity Lady Indian’s game versus Tyee started a tad slow as five minutes in the teams were deadlocked at 4-4. A block by Senior Solana Jackson on a Tyee fast break and three Senior Jamariana Smith three-pointers woke up the Renton offense. Her clutch shooting coupled with a lock-down smothering defense positioned Renton for a 24-10 first-quarter lead.

Renton (15-0 overall, and 9-0 in conference play) outscored Tyee 13-7 in the low scoring second quarter. Both teams pressing man-to-man defenses seemed to bother the other team. The Lady Indians hit another couple treys and cleaned the glass for a couple put-backs to lead 37-17 at the half.

Timely substitutions and rotations by Lady Indian Head Coach Tim White led to a fresh Lady Indian team in the third quarter. They traded basket for basket with the Lady Totems however, four of the Lady Indian buckets were long-range giving them a higher point aggregate for an equal number of shots. Renton led 52-27 after three quarters, posting a 15-10 third quarter.

Lady Indian Freshman Nyachang Luok helped Renton dominate the final quarter as she scored nine points on four baskets and a charity toss. She played solid post defense, added a block and three boards to her stat line.

The undefeated Renton High School Lady Indians play such a smooth game that it lulls the crowd to sleep and suddenly they are up by 30 points. Renton took the ‘W’ 66-33 and the final quarter 14-6.

JV

The JV RHS Lady Indians passed their way to lead the Tyee Lady Totems 13-2 after a quarter of action. The game was close through half of the initial quarter until Renton shot the lid off the basket and hit on its final five shots of the quarter to snare their 11-point lead.

Renton outscored Tyee 9-3 in the second quarter to lead 22-5 as the teams retired to their respective locker rooms for halftime. The Lady Indians' fast-break accounted for the majority of their second-quarter points. With many of the breaks, and pinpoint passing, leading to easy layups.

The Lady Indians cleaned the offensive window in the third quarter for board after board leading to an 11-2 quarter and an overall 33-7 lead 75 percent through the game. Aggressive, pressing Renton guard play led to numerous Tyee turnovers.

Renton scored early and often in the fourth quarter to secure their 49-10 victory. The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Totems 16-3 in the final quarter, their biggest scoring differential of the contest.

C-Team

The RHS C-Team Lady Indians defeated the Tyee Lady Totems 47-9.

Renton led at the end of the first quarter 10-3 and extended their lead to 12 at the half (19-7) with a 9-4 second quarter. With Coach Tammy Jackson-Cloy barking out orders and plays, the Lady Indians dominated the paint in the first half scoring over 60 percent of their buckets up close. An aggressive, man-to-man defense led to an impressive number of turnovers and Lady Indian second chances.

The Lady Indians dominated the third quarter, 14-2, scoring multiple points off turnovers coupled with great passes for easy buckets. RHS led after three quarters - 33-9.

The fourth quarter was all Renton as they notched a 14-0 shutout quarter to take a 47-9 victory. The Lady Indians dominated at cleaning the glass at both ends of the floor on the way to their lopsided win.
