On this day 250 years ago Rehoboth voted to encourage families to manufacture saltpeter, a key ingredient in the production of gunpowder. British blockades meant Patriots could not import saltpeter and they had to instead turn to domestic production. This meant burying animal and human waste until the ammonia caused nitrates to form. The white snow-like saltpeter could eventually be harvested and mixed with charcoal and sulfur to make gunpowder. War was a dirty business indeed.
