They’re coming back!!

The Cranes Are Back

Last evening, we heard Sandhill Cranes calling just south of Baraboo. Their amazing call carries across open fields this time of year, letting everyone know that spring is just around the corner.

Red-winged Blackbirds, Heron, and Turkey Vultures won’t be far behind.

Meteorological spring begins on February 28, the last day of the month. In meteorology, winter is grouped into three fixed calendar months to capture the coldest stretch of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, meteorological winter runs from December 1 through February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.

Astronomical winter ends on the spring equinox, March 20 or 21, when day and night are closest to equal, and the sun passes directly overhead at the equator.

Either way, even the cranes know spring is on the way.
