Warm Springs 🐎

I used to drive through every two weeks, sometimes more frequently, during chemo treatment and my overall past 4 year monitoring post treatment at becoming very familiar with the herd.

I remembered the different bands (micro herds within the herd), their unique coloring specific to each stallion, and their numbers.

I would get so excited to count the babies in the spring, and to watch them play, chasing the "babysitter" mare (yes, Mustangs delegate specific mares to watch the babies in groups, for protection, and to teach them about herd dynamics and manners of the hierarchy - these horses are of a higher intelligence than most humans realize).

The excitement to drive through each spring would build. Until one year, after a massive cull of the herd.
💔
I only found a few horses.
💔
For nearly two years, alone, I cried every time I drove to OHSU Oncology through Warm Springs, unable to spot more than a few horses every time I traveled when I normally counted upwards of 30-40.

Many of the bands had vanished. It was two years before their numbers started to come back, just this season.

We are wiping the Mustang from the wild, & locking them up in holding cells, called BLM holding facilities, until they are adopted (very very small percentage is adopted).
The rest are shipped to an atrocious slaughter.
How we as living beings can justify this, is beyond my comprehension.
If you agree with slaughter, I'll ask you to politely unfriend me; I'm not here to debate your personal opinion.

Empathy is free.

Have we not learned by cutting down entire rain forests, or trees that are thousands of years old that we can't replace them?
Or by the extinction of species, that they don't magically reappear, and they are gone forever??
That their place in the ecosystem is invaluable? And that the planet is suffering because of their absence?
💔
My heart will never understand.
But for now, my photos and my voice will have to be enough.

Please educate yourself if you haven't already, on the importance of preservation of the beautiful Mustang to support keeping them wild 🐎
