Baby’s Night Owl Problem: Fixing That Tiny Broken Clock
Don’t panic—your baby isn’t broken. They’re just born with an underdeveloped circadian rhythm, aka their internal clock. Fun fact: you had one too (and yes, your mom probably still remembers the sleepless nights). Without guidance, your baby’s natural confusion about day and night can wreak havoc on sleep—for both of you.
The circadian rhythm, or biological clock, is what tells us when to sleep and wake, thanks to hormones like melatonin. But here’s the catch: your baby doesn’t come with this system fully installed. Instead, they’re in “party mode” at night, a leftover habit from when you rocked them to sleep with your movements during pregnancy.
So, how do you fix this tiny night owl? Start by establishing a regular feeding cycle—it’s like setting the clock to a good rhythm. Then, make daytime clearly daytime: open the blinds, crank up your favorite playlist, and live your life normally.
At night, flip the script. Dim the lights, hush the house, and channel your inner bedtime storyteller with a soft, calming voice. Keep this routine consistent, and over time, your baby will get the memo: night is for sleeping, not partying.
It may take a couple of months (around 8 weeks or when melatonin production kicks in), but with patience and consistency, those sleepless nights will be a distant memory—and your mornings will finally feel cheerful again. Hang in there, sleepy parents, because better nights are just around the corner! 🌙🍼🎶
