Merry Christmas! What are ya doin' New Years Day?
Note: Due to changing conditions on the mountain, broken wagon spokes, shortages, surpluses, and ever-growing appetites plus regulatory policies, federal mandates, and other fancy city words – exact details regarding this make-believe world may differ. Mark: Broke the front derailleur cable on the mtb - xt 8 speed. Got the cable in place but having trouble attaching/adjusting it. When the cable broke it fell to the inside, smallest chainring. So do I work the shift lever down 3 times to the lowest tension then attach the cable? O do I have it backwards?
Seely: Well of course you'll want to start with the shift lever set at bottom low. Adjustments are primarily made with the barrel-adjuster, up at the shifter. The cable connection is critical as excessive slack cannot be trimmed out with the barrel-adjuster alone. Pull as much slack out of the cable using needle-nose pliers before locking down the set-screw/bolt. A properly adjusted front derailleur, for a 3-ring system, will typically result in a very slight chain rub on the inner blade of the front-derailleur when the rear is shifted up to lowest (Biggest) cog on the rear. This is the barrel adjustment part. Remember, front derailleur adjustments are truly the realm of los maestros. Have fun and don't forget the wedged stick in the mechanism to ride home in the middle-ring next time.
