Came across this magazine as I was wandering about the bookstore. WHERE & WHAT Women Create Just beautiful. Real stories, real lives.
I have to have a clean slate mentally before creating. Clear surfaces, music away, floor vacuumed etc which often feels like it takes so much time to prep my mind to create after transitioning from other activities in the room, but, it’s how I’ve always been, so I just roll with it and know it’s important to take the time in my creative process.
It feels like I am clearing a ‘shelf’ in my brain in order to make room for new ideas to sit on. I create best from space - like a rest in music - which makes what follows more defined.
What does your creative work space look like? What inspires you about it?
I’m rediscovering the joy of 🎻 this summer season. I set myself a July challenge to revisit some movements from Bach’s Violin Sonatas and Partitas. I would love to play these in public, as I have only ever played them in exams (forever ago), simply to give them a voice. They are SO satisfying to play and the more I played them, they began to shape themselves. I realise this shaping process is potentially endless… well, at least lifelong. ;) The 6 Sonatas and Partitas are each in a different key and have several movements in each. This one is in d minor - the key of rumination.
I asked S U Z I E B U R G E S S if I could play while she “played” and painted in her studio. I really loved this concept and would love to develop this idea for aspiring creatives and music lovers as a ‘retreat’ to spend an hour knitting, painting, moving, journalling etc while I play.
What do you think? Is this an idea you would be interested in?
PS: Technique focus: I’ve been working on my left hand pinkie shape and strength and my bow control changing direction at the frog of the bow.
