Will Fertilizer Burn Your Lawn!?
A frequent misconception in the landscape industry is about fertilizing grass in the summer. Many people believe putting down fertilizer when it’s hot is sure to burn your lawn. While there may be some truth to this thought, trusting your lawn to a professional (or knowing what you’re doing) is highly unlikely to result in a burnt lawn. Considering grass type, weather conditions, and type of fertilizer is an important part of a good turf program. Since most lawns in the Sacramento Valley consist of Tall Fescue grass, this post will apply mostly to this grass type and similar cool-season grass types.
The reason a lawn may burn would be from putting down excessive amounts of fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and has quick-release action. These fertilizers are useful in the spring and fall to bring strength and a beautiful pop of green. But since they are instantly activated by water, these fertilizers can put large amounts of stress on the grass when it is already stressed by the heat in the summer. The salts in the fertilizer pull moisture out of the plant, depriving it of its much-needed water.
So how do you provide nutrients to the grass in the heat of the summer without damaging the lawn? Professional turf companies (like us) will specifically tailor a program of the right fertilizers (and soil treatments) for every season. During these hot summer months, I'll use a slow-release fertilizer that will feed the lawn slowly over weeks or even months, preventing any kinds of burns or excessive stress, while providing nutrients that the grass still needs during the summer to help keep it healthy. Additionally, at Byerly Turf Management, as part of my turf program I add a soil treatment every other service throughout the year that will help strengthen and build the grass roots, which in turn will reduce the amount of water, fertilizers, and pesticides needed. This is all part of a specifically designed program to keep your lawn healthy, while not only surviving, but thriving though the stress of the hot summer!
