EFFECTIVE INSULATION IS CRITICAL FOR MAINTAINING A COOL TEMPERATURE INSIDE THE SHELTER

Although blankets may seem practical, they tend to retain heat and increase thermal discomfort. Utilizing straw is a superior alternative; it acts as an efficient natural barrier against heat while permitting necessary airflow. Lining the interior walls with straw will successfully regulate the temperature and protect the felines from the heat.

Additionally, locating the shelter in a shaded area can make a significant difference in keeping it cool. Look for a spot where the shelter will be shielded from direct sunlight for most of the day. This will help prevent the interior from heating up excessively and provide a cooler environment for the cats to seek refuge.

Remember, providing a cool shelter is not only about the comfort of the feral cats but also about their well-being. Extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening for these vulnerable animals. By implementing these techniques, we can create a safe and cool haven that offers respite from the sweltering summer temperatures.

The saying, “Hay is for horses, straw is for strays,” is well known, but it can be a little misleading.

Hay isn’t just for horses. It’s an important food source for many animals, including cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other herbivores.

The better way to remember it is this:
Hay is for eats. Straw is for sleeps.
Hay provides nutrition, while straw is primarily used as bedding because it is dry, insulating, and much less nutritious.

Whether you’re caring for horses, livestock, rabbits, or community cats needing outdoor shelters, knowing the difference helps ensure animals get what they need—food where food belongs and bedding where warmth and comfort matter.

By switching to this simple phrase, it can be used across many situations, not just for horses and strays.

Not to mention (but I am), the word strays, like feral, often gets backlash. Community cats seems to be the “in” verbiage.

We just can’t keep everyone happy. On this page it’s “Hay is for eats, straw for sleeps.”
