You never know what you will run across when working a crash scene in a new location. Today we met this fine fellow!

EDRs in modern vehicles are designed to withstand the tremendous forces in a crash and survive to tell us a bit about what happened... at least for most crashes. But sometimes the forces are so severe that the EDR itself is damaged and communication is not possible. The next step is a 'chip swap", transferring the small memory chip from the damaged EDR to an undamaged exemplar. Tedious work but the only way to get at the important data.
