Today's mensch, Haym Salomon was a Jewish financial hero of the American Revolution.

Salomon was a Sepphardic Jew who immigrated to New York from Poland in 1775. He first achieved success as a merchant and then dealer in foreign securities. He was sympathetic to the Patriot cause and became involved with the Sons of Liberty. When war broke out in 1776, Salomon got a contract to supply American troops in central New York. Twice arrested by the British, he was able to escape ex*****on and make his way to Philadelphia.

Between 1781-1784 Salomon personally loaned $650,000 (in today's money that is more than $18,000,000) to George Washington and the war effort. It was with money from Salomon that Washington was able to feed and clothe his troops and win the final battle of the Revolution at Yorktown.

Salomon was also very involved with the Jewish community. He helped lead the successful fight to repeal the test oath that barred Jews and other non-Christians from holding public office in Pennsylvania. In responding to anti-Semitic slander in the press, Salomon said, "I am a Jew; it is my own nation; I do not despair that we shall obtain every other privilege that we aspire to enjoy along with our fellow-citizens."

Despite financial setbacks at the end of his life, Salomon’s name will forever be remembered for his contribution to the cause of American freedom.
