Let's bring back the cable car??
DOWNTOWN RALEIGH CIRCA 1909: Wow, look at the intersection of Fayetteville and Martin Streets more than a century ago!
Do any of the buildings look familiar? Take a look at the streets — cobblestone rather than asphalt like today.
The men are dressed in fine suits, and a woman on the trolley can be seen in a high-neck gown and wide-brim hat.
A sign on the trolley is advertising a baseball game between Raleigh and Fayetteville. Records show in 1909, our city had a baseball team called the Raleigh Red Birds that played in a six-team league at the A&M Baseball Park on the campus of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now NC State).
And it looks like Raleigh won the game!
Funny how much you can learn about our city’s history from a single photograph.
