It’s in the eyes.
The heat, the weight of the flak jacket, the rattle of the tracks beneath me—this was Vietnam. And I, Raymond Raliford Mays, was here because my country asked me to be.

I was born in Okeechobee, Florida, in 1950, a small-town kid with a quiet spirit and a steady hand. I was drafted into the Army, and like so many others, I stood up when called. They trained me as an Armor Crewman, handed me a steel beast and told me to be ready for anything. I was assigned to C Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, part of the Americal Division. We didn’t talk much about fear—we just kept the turrets turning and our heads on a swivel.

I began my tour on October 16, 1970, and by July of the next year, I was battle-tested. Every morning could bring a firefight. Every nightfall was another test of nerves. On July 7, 1971, in Quang Nam Province, that test came again—artillery and rocket fire rained down. The enemy didn’t knock. They struck hard, fast, and without warning. In that storm of steel and fire, I gave my last breath.

I was 20 years old.

They said I died in hostile action. That’s true. But I died a soldier, doing my duty, standing watch not just for myself, but for the brothers beside me. I never got to go home to Okeechobee. Never heard the silence of Florida fields again. But I left something behind—a name, a legacy, a sacrifice.

So if you ever pass Panel 03W, Line 11 on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, stop and look into the stone. Look closely.

It’s in the eyes. You’ll see me there.
