UNC Pembroke just launched a scholarship program that covers tuition, housing, meals, and more for students who want to become science and math teachers in rural, high-need communities in southeastern NC.

The UNCP program is specifically designed to place teachers in high-poverty districts like Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, and Columbus counties, cultivating educators who reflect and understand the communities they serve.

Big news for the future of North Carolina classrooms!

The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program is welcoming a record 522 new Fellows for the 2026–27 academic year — the largest incoming cohort since the program was reinstated, with students joining from 77 North Carolina counties and 11 states!

Through forgivable loans of up to $10,000 per year, Teaching Fellows helps make earning a teaching degree more affordable while preparing future educators to serve students across North Carolina. Fellows also gain mentorship, leadership development, classroom experience, and a statewide network of support.

As North Carolina continues working to strengthen the teacher pipeline, these future educators are preparing to make a lasting impact in classrooms and communities across our state.

Through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program, students can study at one of ten outstanding educator preparation programs in North Carolina, including the ECU College of Education, AND receive up to $5,000 per semester in forgivable loans to cover tuition, books, and fees.

Through mentoring other Fellows and building friendships within the program, Jaydelyn has discovered just how powerful community can be.
