#50/50

Zippy was given a chance because small rescues can take the time to put in the work. That's why it's so important to support us. Zippy would not have done well in a large shelter or a kennel. He needed a safe environment and because he has that, he has progressed so well.

He's available for adoption in NY, NJ and PA. Zippy is dog and cat friendly, neutered, healthy and a very good boy. Visit our website to fill out an adoption survey 🐾

Lately, we've been asking ourselves a rather difficult question: why are adoptions down?

It's heartbreaking because every day, we see incredible dogs waiting for someone to give them a chance. We've been having to turn dog requests away because we have to care for the ones in our rescue who are still waiting, and we simply don't have the space for more. But it also feels like when we explain to people who are interested in adoption, their interest fizzles out when we explain the rescue rule of 3's.

People expect a dog to come home and instantly fit into their lives without missing a beat. But the truth is, that's just not how it works, especially a rescue dog who's history may have been a dark one.

Think about this: if you were taken from everything you knew and dropped into a completely new place with strangers, you'd be nervous too. The first day, the dog may be scared. The first week, they might still not know what to do or feel comfortable. Some take a little longer to trust, and that's okay. They're learning a new routine, new people, new sounds, new sights, and for many of them, what it even feels to be safe.

When Cypress was first rescued and became a sanctuary dog, she loved "inside," especially the couch. She adapted well to our casa Zion pod after she saw she was safe, but we quickly learned "outside" was scary. To this day, even though we've had her for 3 years, she gets scared and trembles outside of the yard. Mini walks are a big feat for her. If she sees a raccoon in the tree from the window, she freaks out, barks and paces trying to protect us. We're proud of her recent progress of not barking at the human neighbors when they're outside when she's outside. Their dogs are a different story though, she likes to protect her home.

Nothing is wrong with her, she's an absolute princess and loves to snuggle in bed, eat cheese and watch tv. She is a fetch pro and likes to look out into Jamaica Bay and watch the birds from afar.

These moments don't happen without patience though. They don't happen without commitment, and they definitely don't happen over night.

Remember that adoption is a dog starting a new beginning, and the bond can take time.
