Accidents Happen - Here’s How to Clean Them Up

If your puppy goes to the bathroom in their crate, scoop and wipe out what you can with paper towels, then put bleach in it and let it sit somewhere your puppy cannot get to it for at least five minutes. Then thoroughly rinse it out with water and towel dry. Wait to put your puppy in the crate again until it has completely dried.

If your puppy goes to the bathroom in your house, wipe up as much as possible then spray with an enzyme cleaner to get rid of the smell so your puppy won’t be attracted to that spot again. Finally, vacuum over it if it is on carpet before letting your puppy back in the area.

Need a home remedy? Use one part white vinegar to one part lukewarm water after soaking up as much mess as possible with newspaper or paper towels. Then sprinkle with baking soda, let sit for five minutes, and finally vacuum over the area.

Of course, preventing accidents is always easier than cleaning them up, so if you can do! Set a timer to remind you to take your puppy outside to go potty on regular intervals. Keep track of their potty habits on our housetraining chart so you will better anticipate their needs. When they are awake in your house, limit their free space to one room until they successfully keep that space clean, then add one room at a time until finally they view your entire home as living space. Watch them like a hawk when they are awake and moving around. If they start to go quickly rush them outside to finish. Reward them well for going outside and they will be more likely to repeat this behavior in the future.
