Great animation starts long before you ever sit down to get to work.
Disney legend Frank Thomas laid out the ultimate three-step formula for animators: "Observe Everything. Communicate Well. Draw, Draw, Draw."
Even if you're primarily focused on 3D animation or 3D modeling, this advice has not changed one bit.
First, you have to look at the world around you with a critical eye, noticing the subtle weight shifts, the face of someone who has lived in it, and the way emotion changes a person's posture or movement. Next, you have to take those observations and communicate them clearly through your work so the audience instantly understands what a character is feeling. Finally, you have to practice relentlessly.
For 3D animators, "draw, draw, draw" does not mean you are confined to a pencil and paper. It means sketching out your thumbnails, planning your poses, and putting in the hours to train your artistic eye. It is about building your muscle memory for appeal, staging, and silhouette. It the means getting out there and really looking at the people, animals, and the world around you.
That foundational artistic training is exactly what we lean into at AnimSchool. Our industry-pro instructors will teach you how to look at the world like an artist, plan your shots effectively, and build the observational habits required to succeed in animation.
Keep an eye out over the coming weeks as we feature more wisdom and quotes from Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men.

Story is king. Everything else is just details.
The legendary story artist Joe Ranft Joe Ranft summed up the ultimate truth of animated movies perfectly: "No matter how beautiful the animation, how clever the gags, or how impressive the technology, if the story doesn’t work, none of it matters."
It is incredibly easy to get hyper-focused on the visual eye candy. We want the smoothest movement, the most impressive techniques, and animation that looks flawless. But if there’s no narrative driving the animation, it won't move the audience emotionally. If the audience does not care about what the character wants, why they are doing it, and what is at stake, they will tune out.
Joe’s point is that every single frame, every pose, and every micro-expression has to serve the narrative. Your technical skills exist to push the plot forward and reveal who the character is on the inside.
That narrative-driven mindset is woven into the entire curriculum at AnimSchool. Our instructors push you to ask the hard questions before you even set your first keyframe: What is the story of this shot? What is the character's motivation? How does this moment fit into the bigger picture? We give you the technical tools to master 3D animation, but we also train you to think like a storyteller so your work truly connects.
