Have you ever been confused about how to identify cousins? Are we really 4th cousins 1 generation removed? What does that really mean?
Here's a simple way to figure it out. First, find your most recent common ancestor or MRCR. Then determine the relationship of that MRCR to each of you. Take the shortest number of G's in the two relationships and that's the cousin number. The difference between the two G's is the number of generations removed.
Here's an example. Suppose Jerry and I are both related to John and Mary Simonson. John and Mary are Jerry's 3G-Grandparents (4G's) and are my 2G-Grandparents (3G's). That means Jerry and I are 3rd Cousins (the smallest number of G's) 1 generation removed (4G's - 3G's).
What that means is that Jerry and I are 1 generation apart in our relation to our MRCA. If we removed the generation gap, we would be 3rd Cousins.

Should I take a DNA test? Which test should I take? What do my results mean? These are questions many people ask me when considering DNA testing.
First, identify the purpose for taking a DNA test. That purpose could be, 1) to validate my family tree, 2) to find the biological parents of myself or another adoptee in my family, 3) identify if I have any tendencies towards certain genetic diseases or what medicines work best for me, 4) break a brick wall in my family tree, 5) be a resource for others hoping to find family, or 6) see what my ethnicity is.
Second, you must be prepared for the results. DNA does not lie and you may find that your great grandfather was not your biological great grandfather.
Answers to the above two questions will help determine if you should test, what test to take, and how to interpret the results.

Just finished the research report for an adoptee's discovery of their biological parents. Even though both parents have already passed on, we were able to locate and establish a relationship with her maternal half-sister! Also, relationships have been made with cousins on her father's side. I cant wait to deliver the report to her.
