Days 5&6 (Another 2-for-1 today!) of challenging myself to post some unshared artwork every day of February. An overfilled paint bottle that I had to photograph and save as reference for later, which I ended up recreating here in both watercolor and marker.

Day 4 of challenging myself to post some unshared artwork every day of February. Let’s call today a 2-for-1, because I’m already ready for a day off 😂
8x10 watercolor painting of my grad cap, & the actual cap itself, which was decorated with acrylic paint, model magic in a silicone mold for the frame, and a heavy pour of mod podge for the glassy look.

Day 4 of challenging myself to post some unshared artwork every day of February. Never gave this painting from my Senior Art show its own moment. Looking back at this piece and reliving the process of painting it is a huge reminder to myself to reassess & adapt when the process isn’t what I anticipated it to be. It took me some time to come to terms with actually liking this painting, as there are several layers of frustration under the finished piece. All about that trusting that process, baby.

Take pictures with your loved ones. But if you don’t get the opportunity to do so, PAINT THEM. (Done in Acrylic, Watercolor, & Ink on 12x18 Canvas Panel)

I didn’t have any recent photos of us together. However, what I did have was a lovely last memory eating cinnamon rolls together on her porch, and a photo of her in that moment.
4 weeks ago on Sunday, September 15th, I received news from my Aunt Jan that my grandmother passed peacefully at the age of 95. While spending a couple of days home from work, I started to become frustrated at the fact that I didn’t make an effort to take more photos with her. My grandma was a painter herself, and made SO much art even towards the end of her life, that I realized it would only be appropriate to devote my grieving time to not only do a bit of a painting, but to capture our last memory and depict it as the two of us together to make up for our lack of photos.
I was able to work on this painting at home for a couple of days, but lost the privilege of having time to continue it after going back to work. I finally had some down time to finish it up while in Texas the past couple days for her memorial, and even got to use her watercolor paints & ink pens for the final touches.
Same as I when I shared this on my personal account, I’m going to keep comments off in an attempt to keep this post quiet, but thank you to anyone who was hoping to comment and send your condolences. As it was emphasized at her memorial service last weekend, Marian Miner Moore was a woman of so many amazing talents and accomplishments, but was always humble and quietly extraordinary, never making herself the center of attention.
Working on this painting during the grieving process felt so special. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t consider themselves to be an artist, I encourage you to try something like this when you lose someone special. It felt like we were together while I painted.
