From Ron Apollon, Head Coach and LDGA Director
After a goalkeeper makes a save, they become the launch point of the attack. The job isn’t just to hold the ball—it’s to read the field, move with urgency, and make the first decisive pass. That means securing the ball, sprinting to the top of the 18, scanning the opposite side for open players, and choosing the right type of distribution. Sometimes it’s a quick throw or roll to a checking teammate, other times it’s a driven ball into space, a drop‑kick to jump‑start a break, or a punt toward an area where the team has numbers. A sharp GK looks for early 1v1 or 2v2 opportunities in the attacking third, pushes teammates forward when options are limited, and stays involved by stepping up as a backpass outlet.
In the end, goalkeepers must understand that they are the starting point of the attack, not just the last line of defense. Use every distribution tool available and play with purpose!
Save the date for LDGA’s 2026 Summer Camp! 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬: 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟐–𝟐𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. A perfect chance for players to grow, compete, and sharpen their game with LDGA training.
