Happy National Weather Observers Day from Portland's OG weather observation tower--the Portland Observatory! Did you know that three times a day, from the Observatory's construction in 1807 to his death in 1846, Captain Lemuel Moody (shown here) would climb the Observatory's 104 steps and take "thermometrical" readings that included temperature and weather notations?

Visitors to the Observatory today can see exactly what the temperature was 200 years ago morning, noon, and night. This is thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Brian, an Observatory docent, who painstakingly transcribed pages of Moody's original records, which are housed at Maine Historical Society.

The Observatory opens for visitors this year on Saturday, May 23rd. Check portlandlandmarks.org for more information!
