Hawthorne Ghost Tour
06/02/2020
Hi Everyone, this is Marina the Best Operating Officer of the Hawthorne Ghost Tour and I wanted to say something to our friends and family members in Portland and around the world, something that must be stated by every human being of conscience: Black lives matter. Our Black siblings are in danger today and if we have any ability to help, it's important that we do that.
The Portland Police and the mayor have used the recent protests over the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the people murdered by police here in Portland: among them, 17 year old Quanice Hayes, as a reason to increase police presence and even to call in the National Guard.
They say that the vandalism of local businesses is why they are bringing an increasingly militarized force against largely peaceful protesters. But I find that hard to believe. We've been in business on Hawthorne for the last 6 years, many times, someone who is suffering in some way has smashed the windows of my business neighbors, or vandalized a store front, and the Portland Police are not concerned at all.
The vandalism downtown is getting a lot of press coverage, but I'm here to tell you, as a business owner and advocate for many years, vandalism is a part of doing business in this city and any other day, it would be treated as low priority. Because it is, when we put this in perspective. People's lives, their safety and their civil rights matter more than windows and they always will.
This police force can not justify their actions. It is not okay to use small businesses like mine as a distraction from the real issue. Across this country, and here in Portland, the police aren't meant to protect us. If they were, they would care when our windows get smashed and it doesn't coincide with a convenient excuse to shoot people with tear gas and rubber bullets and play at being Rambo while threatening civilian lives.
These crocodile tears Mayor Wheeler and the Portland Police are shedding for small businesses are nothing but a red herring. When the smoke clears, they'll go back to ignoring us, harassing our customers and staff, and treating our safety like it's not their problem.
Please don't be fooled. This increase in police violence is not for my benefit, or for yours. It's here to discourage us from standing up for each other. We're so grateful to be your neighborhood ghost tour and we want all our neighbors to be able to live in a safe, healthy, happy community. That means holding our peace force to a higher standard. A much much higher standard.
Stay safe everyone 🙏

Hey Everyone, due to the Governor extending the stay at home order until July 6, we've cancelled all tours before July 18.
We're so grateful to see that people are staying home to flatten the curve and save lives. It is a small price to pay to ensure that our community is safe.
We can't wait to see you healthy and happy when this is over. We will continue to follow the advice of doctors and scientists and do everything we can to show up for Hawthorne Blvd.
