🖤🤘 Day 1 of the
Today is Paschimottanasana, a seated forward fold. It is also a pose I see lots and lots of folks struggling and feeling frustrated with and I kind of hate demoing this pose… because my body moves into it so easily. And I try to be transparent about why : it’s not because I’m so flexible or “good at yoga” or committed to mastering every pose… it’s because I was born breech, literally folded up like this at an odd angle in the womb and I wore braces as a baby to try to fix the malformation of my hip bones. (It kind of worked, but my bones are definitely still a bit off.) My body folds easy not because I’m “good at this”, it’s because my body is a little messed up. And this is a good reminder when you’re looking around at other bodies having a different experience in each position:
⚡️ every body has a different background
⚡️ most of what people can do with their bodies starts more with luck than it does with skill
⚡️ often it’s our weaknesses that make us more adaptable
The most important thing to remember in this and any other pose, is that the shape of it, the look of it, is not the purpose. Poses are teachers, tools, to help to navigate a certain feeling or intention. A forward fold is a turning inward, an examination. It may not always feel soft, but what could you do to soften it a bit more? (Hint: my top three suggestions are softening to bend the knees, sitting up on something soft to elevate and open the hips, and softening the breath 😮‍💨)
