Senior Spotlight: Candace Ngan

Today, we’re celebrating graduating senior Candace Ngan!

This fall, Candace will attend the University of Texas at Dallas to study Materials Science and Engineering.

“Performing alongside such talented musicians has been an incredible opportunity. My time in PYP has not only allowed me to grow musically, but it has also helped me build lasting friendships and deeply nurtured my love for collaborative music-making. I am truly grateful to the wonderful conductors and fellow musicians who make this community so inspiring.”

Congratulations, Candace! We’re excited to see all that you accomplish in the years ahead and wish you the very best as you begin this next chapter.

Recent PYP graduates: we’d love to feature you too! Send us a recent photo, your next steps after graduation, and a few words about your time at PYP for a chance to be featured in upcoming senior spotlights and alumni stories.

PYP has once again been named a finalist for Willamette Week’s Best of Portland 2026 in the Arts + Entertainment category!

Winning last year was deeply meaningful for our students, families, alumni, and community. It was a reminder that youth arts matter in Portland, and that young musicians deserve a place on the city’s biggest stages.

If PYP has impacted you or your family in any way, we’d be so grateful for your vote!

“PYP has impacted me with a really great community full of outstanding musicians… and some of my greatest friends.”

Meet Graham Rank, A recently graduated tuba player in Portland Youth Wind Ensemble.

From building sight-reading skills to performing exciting new music, Graham says PYWE has given him more than just musical growth. It’s given him a community.

“It’s very wind-focused, so there’s a lot of playing… especially for tuba.”

At PYP, students don’t just rehearse together. They challenge each other, grow together, and create friendships that last far beyond the concert hall.

Auditions for Season 103 are now open.
