Metro releases study to increase reuse and repair of home goods 09/11/2023

Check out our recent article for Metro! They released the results of a study that reveals the challenges of reducing bulky waste in our region to propose possible policy solutions, and we helped pen the news.

Bulky waste is anything that's too large to fit in waste collection bins. It’s becoming a weighty issue—24 million pounds of furniture were discarded in 2018 alone. To understand the scale of the problem, Metro commissioned a study that “identifies gaps and opportunities for expanding large item reuse, calls for improving services for historically marginalized groups, and recommends strengthening relationships with local reuse organizations.”

We’ve held an open-services contract with Metro since 2020, and we always appreciate the opportunity to shine a light on sustainability issues here in Portland.

We designed the SmartPark rebrand back in late 2018. It's been under wraps until recently, and we are so excited to see these out in the world at the newly renovated Yamhill and 10th parking garage, designed by FFA Architecture and Interiors. The owl, named "Parker" by our client, replaces "Les, the parking attendant" graphic that has been part of the SmartPark brand for over 20 years. The owl moves the brand away from anthropomorphic images and is meant to be an animal kingdom companion to Parking Kitty.

We also produced associated graphics that illustrate how the notion of parking has shifted to include bicycles, car share vehicles, electric vehicles, motorcycles, and more. It was a pleasure to partner with FFA and landscape and wayfinding specialists Knot Design on this project. Thanks, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) for this fun project!

The City of Laguna Beach - Government's Public Works Department has just installed a large permanent sign package that we designed on their behalf. Our work included a new logo for their program that ties to their city seal, a vibrant, eye-catching palette to help people find the lots and parking rules easily, and sign and information consolidation to reduce visual clutter inside the lots. Can't wait to see these IRL. Such a rewarding project for a fantastic client!
