Screening & Conversation with Lisa Kori
Saturday, June 20 | 3–4 p.m.
Portland Chinatown Museum
The Portland Chinatown Museum is pleased to present a special screening of Asian PaCIVICS, a nationally broadcast television series featuring artists from The Slants Foundation’s AAPI artist-accelarator program. On Saturday, June 20, from 3:00–4:00 p.m., this free event will feature a viewing of the last episode of their third season, highlighting musician and artist Lisa Kori, who will also be in attendance.
In this episode of Asian PaCIVICS, viewers are given a behind-the-scenes look at Lisa Kori’s multiyear project, Daughter of the West, and her search for early Asian-American music. Although she discovers that much of the history is lacking due to systemic forces, she finds Flower Drum Song, a song that would have been brought over by early Chinese immigrants. Rewriting it with a protagonist who wanders the American West, Kori creates an alternate history where the songs and stories of early Asian-American immigrants are not forgotten but celebrated as American folk culture. Lisa Kori will be present to introduce the episode and host a Q&A at its conclusion.
