“Stay Gold” is an iconic phrase from S.E. Hinton’s novel, “The Outsiders,” referencing a Robert Frost poem (“Nothing Gold Can Stay”). It speaks to staying true to yourself and holding onto something honest and fleeting before it disappears.

We asked twelve writers to share one story that mattered to them, something they would not want forgotten. This is an attempt to represent and preserve a piece of graffiti’s collective memory before it is lost to time.
