As you plan that summer trip...a look back…
In 1972, my dad got out of the Army and took a cross-country trip from California to Massachusetts in his VW Beetle.
He was in no hurry - and couldn’t go very fast in that Beetle anyway...but he did keep a log of the whole trip, including what it cost to drive coast to coast.
Total cost for gas from CA to MA in 1972? ⛽
$36.88.
Back then, he was paying about 35 cents a gallon.
Three days and 3,209 miles later - he arrived in Upton, MA, having spent a total of $75.33…
AND he needed a new battery.
Looks like he hit a few bumps along the way too.
Pretty wild.
