Summertime in Portland, Oregon requires two staple ingredients: a dangerously flaky, homemade Boysenberry pie and a scoop of freshly churned ice cream. But no amount of sweet, sticky berry bliss can truly define the season without the charming Royal Rosarians working on behalf of the Royal Rosarian Foundation in the annual hosting of the Milk Carton Boat Race held at the Westmoreland Park casting pond.

It was the official time for the participants in this year's family-friendly competition to turn our city's recycling bins into seaworthy (or sink-worthy) vessels, hoping to find out the ultimate answer to the age-old question: will it float?

This beloved spectacle perfectly proves that Portlanders will build seafaring vessels out of absolutely anything as long as the main ingredient contains milk containers. Some ambitious racers will build sleek watercraft that are incredibly swift, while others will design floating grocery aisles held together by hope and a prayer. Ultimately, they’ll all be paddling hard in various racing classes for the glory of taking home an award.
