🟪An exchange of energy from the roots all the way to the glass: Sylvain Pataille’s Marsannay
🪁Last night, Simon Lowry lead us on a tasting of the 2022 vintage from Sylvain Pataille in the northerly Cote de Nuits village of Marsannay. Simon expressed elements of the history of the region in a way that brought meaningful context to all.
💜Simon illuminated why Marsannay’s status in the pre-80s appellation system meant that many older vineyards survived. In contrast to the massively overcropped vineyards in Chenove is the storied vineyard Clos du Roy. This site has been variously planted since medieval Burgundy, and indeed belonged to nobility. Of Pataille’s many acquisitions in Marsannay, he is especially excited by his parcel in Clos du Roy, including aligoté and pinot noir that were planted as far back as the 1950s. The vineyard is on a steep slope and contains grèzes litées which is a geological formation created when water violently fractures limestone, as well as other components like oolitic limestone, red marl, and riverbed deposits. The cepage in Clos du Roy contains historic clones that are hard to find elsewhere. Pataille’s careful preservation of these vines paired with his precise, open, whole-cluster-rich winemaking result in a particular expression of Marsannay that is worth treasuring.
💟Pataille is at the fore of producers who turn to the work of the past to cast forward wine that feels particularly modern and urgent to make, drink, and celebrate. Thank you Simon and to all those working to make these wines available to us in Oregon — a few precious bottles of Clos du Roy remain, for those curious Marsannay hounds among you!
