"For the solid first three months it felt like I was in a dark hole, and it was really difficult."
Shawn Johnson East has spoken openly about how her son's colic amplified everything she was already carrying, turning ordinary moments into fight-or-flight, and the early weeks of motherhood into something she describes as a dark hole.
Perinatal mental health disorders can be triggered or intensified by so many things. Whatever brought you here, your experience is valid, and you don't have to stay in that dark place ๐

๐ 1 in 5 women experience perinatal mental health disorders during pregnancy or postpartum.
That means millions of mothers are struggling quietly while trying to care for their families, often without the support they need.
With Connect the Dots campaign ending June 1, weโre asking our community to help make a difference by starting a Facebook Fundraiser for Postpartum Support International.
You do not need to be an expert in fundraising to help. Even raising $25, $50, or $100 can help connect families to:
โ Free support groups
โ Mental health resources
โ Provider education & training
โ Peer support for parents in need
And yes, once you create your fundraiser, you can make a donation directly to your own fundraiser, and it will go straight to PSI. Every dollar matters.
HOW TO START A FACEBOOK FUNDRAISER:
1๏ธโฃ Visit the Postpartum Support International page
2๏ธโฃ Click the โFundraisersโ tab
3๏ธโฃ Select โRaise Moneyโ
4๏ธโฃ Choose your fundraising goal
5๏ธโฃ Write a few sentences about why this cause matters to you
6๏ธโฃ Share your fundraiser with friends and family
Simple ideas to help your fundraiser succeed:
๐ต Share a personal story or why you care about maternal mental health
๐ต Ask friends to donate instead of buying coffee or takeout one day
๐ต Post updates as donations come in
๐ต Thank every person who donates or shares your fundraiser
๐ต Remind people that 1 in 5 families are impacted
You never know who in your community may need this support someday.
Together, we can remind parents everywhere: You are not alone ๐

"Reach out, tell your doctor the truth, donโt hide your reality. Ask for help, donโt be afraid, go to someone you trust, and at the very least call a help line, reach out to other moms, have someone else who can look at you and say, youโre not alone."
That's the message Juanita wants every struggling parent to hear. Her survivor story is live today on the PSI Blog, and it is a beautiful, honest account of what it looks like to unravel and to find your way back ๐
