The most haunted road in Maine is known to be Route 2A, a lonely stretch that cuts straight through the deep Haynesville Woods up north. For years, people have tied this road to a long list of crashes, lost travelers, and strange stories that never really went away. Even today, drivers say they feel uneasy here, like something is off the moment they enter the trees. Some claim to see figures along the roadside or shapes moving through the woods late at night.

This road is so well-known to be creep locally that Dick Curless, an old-time country music singer, wrote a song about it titled "A Tombstone Every Mile". One of the lines goes: “It’s a stretch of road up North in Maine, that’s never, ever, ever seen a smile. If they buried all the truckers lost in them woods, there’d be a tombstone every mile.” - Dick Curless

The song was based on the real dangers of this road, especially back when truckers had to drive it in brutal winter weather with poor conditions and little help nearby. It helped turn Route 2A into a legend, tying real-life danger to the eerie feeling people still talk about today. If you pull off and explore deeper into the Haynesville Woods, you can still find old traces of the past hidden in the trees.
