Locally known as "Gunkanjima" — Battleship Island — Hashima sits 9 miles off the coast of Nagasaki. It was the heart of Japan's coal industry for almost a century, then emptied overnight when the mine closed in 1974.

Forty years of erosion later, it's one of the most haunting and photogenic ruins on the planet.

Bond fans might recognize it — Skyfall's villain lair was inspired by it. Worth adding to a Japan itinerary. We can help. 🇯🇵

Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan opened in 705 AD at the foot of the Southern Japanese Alps. Twelve hundred years before the United States existed. Six hundred years before the Magna Carta. The same hot springs have been flowing without interruption since the door first opened.

52 generations of the same family have run it. Samurai stayed here. Shoguns stayed here. The current Emperor of Japan has stayed here. There are 37 rooms. You can book one.

This is the kind of stay you don't stumble onto. It's the kind of stay an advisor finds for you.
