The Kinship:

Perched on a sun drenched slope overlooking a sea of alder, maple, wild cherry and fir, this is a cozy two-story cabin for a couple dove-tailed with a ceremonial space in the round for community gatherings.

The structure for the round roof is borrowed from yurt design. We have a steel compression ring that receives the rafters at the top and a tension cable at the top plate that prevents outward movement. In addition to the twelve visible Douglas fir rounds, there are twelve additional rafters behind the plaster.

Another study in hyper local sourcing :
We harvested Douglas fir timbers from the neighboring land trust for framing, mostly left round. Oregon wild cherry trees from build site clearing - moulded into flooring. Reclaimed 2x10 joists from an old barn. Earthen floor from local clay and sand quarries, clay plaster, cedar cladding.

Happy Beltane — I think cross quarterly holidays are my favorite.
